La-La-Si!

Given my association with the world-renowned Philippine Madrigal Singers, people naturally ask whether my son K also likes to sing. You know, I believe I haven't heard him sing more than 10 times in his entire life.

K reacts to music. That manifested when he was about 3 years old and we were on a taxi home and the radio was playing "I never had a dream come true". All of a sudden I heard sniffling. K was crying! I asked him, "What's wrong?" He just shrugged and buried his head into my lap. When the music stopped, he explained that "the music made me cry".  Another instance was at the end of the first Harry Potter movie, he begged me to stay and finish the end credits. I asked him what he was waiting to see on the screen. He said he wanted to finish the music. I noticed that since then, he prefers soundtrack or theme music than songs with lyrics. However, K would occasionally grant us a song or two when we had our Magic Mic moments, but not happily.

Anyway, I was lucky enough to catch him still awake when  got home one night and he told me that he had an oral quiz in solfeggio (reading music).  He appeared nervous about it so I decided to help him out (Actually, I was more excited to teach him, that's the truth).

There were three pieces and he had to sing the notes with the tune and not the actual words. They were: Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, Sakura, and El Coqui. I said to myself: this was a piece of cake. "Do-do-sol-sol-la-la-sol..." We studied the first song quickly. When we got to the 2nd song, I was struggling a bit with the third (as I always have) and in the short pauses while I was figuring out the tune, I heard K humming the correct one softly.  I asked him: "Do you know this already?" He goes: "Yeah, kinda." So I said, "Sige nga (Alright) sing it." And he did. Perfectly.

I felt so proud at that moment. For many moms, their kids singing and dancing talents may be nothing new. But for me, this was really special. I felt even prouder when I found out the next day that he got one of the highest grades in class. :) One more step for K! Hurray!

  1. Wow, a natural! Does he play any instrument as well? Sounds like he has the ear and the heart. :)
